As some of may know, my first foray into the world of blogging was with a short-lived fashion blog equipped with a frivolous title, as fashion blogs often are. Not so Tavi Gevinson’s Style Rookie blog which catapulted her into the world of fashion, and brought her to the attention of fashion editors (I’m talking Anna Wintour) and designers (Karl Lagerfeld, if you don’t mind!) alike at the mere age of twelve. Yes, that’s right – TWELVE!
Now at the positively ancient age of fifteen Gevinson has launched Rookie, an online magazine for teenage girls which promises ‘smart, fun writing’ from an impressive list of contributors, amongst them YA author Stephanie Kuehnert (I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone, Ballads of Suburbia). Already boasting a significant following, Rookie is a commentary on the issues affecting the daily lives of teenage girls with categories including love and sex, dear diary, live through this and the all important eye candy. The articles are articulate and fun with the same distinctive witty insights and nostalgic tints that permeate Gevinson’s blog. Articles include Kuehnert’s first piece for the magazine, an extensive guide to stomping out stress and restoring sanity while Gevinson’s personal musings on getting over girl hate will undoubtedly resonate with her audience.
Revolving around the life of the teenage girl and her high school schedule, Rookie will update thrice daily – after school, at dinner time and late at night with a sweet dreams post. Articles are thematic with September concentrating on beginnings.
At just fifteen, Tavi is a teenage inspiration. When I was Tavi's age I wrote my journal, listened to Nirvana and Hole and obsessed over Jordan Catalano (not much has changed!) .Tavi has taken her teenage thoughts to the next level and I’ll be following Rookie Magazine’s progression with interest. Such a cool idea, with great visuals and a lot of talented people on board. I think it will be a big hit!
